What every good floor sits on

A coating is only as good as what it's stuck to. Concrete often has a weak, dusty surface layer, old paint or sealer, glue from past floor coverings, or oil soaked into it. A coating laid over any of those will fail along with it.

Grinding takes the surface back to clean, sound concrete and opens it up so the coating can grip. It also brings down high spots and exposes problems like cracks, hollow areas and damp patches that need fixing before the floor is coated.

Grinding makes dust, so it's done with dust extraction. The before shot further down this page is exactly that: a garage slab mid-grind, extractor running.

How it works

How the job runs

Every slab is different, so the detail changes from job to job. This is the usual order of work.

  1. 01

    Assess

    Find out what's on the slab and what's wrong with it: coatings, glue, oil, cracks, damp.

  2. 02

    Strip

    Old coatings and adhesives come off first.

  3. 03

    Grind

    The surface is ground back to clean, sound concrete, with dust extraction running.

  4. 04

    Vacuum & inspect

    The floor is cleaned down and checked for anything the grind has uncovered.

  5. 05

    Repair, then coat

    Cracks and damage are fixed before the coating system goes on.

Why can't you just paint over the concrete?

Because the paint would only be as strong as the surface it's sitting on. Dust, old coatings, oil and weak surface concrete all stop a coating bonding properly, which is why coatings laid without proper prep peel and lift.

Is grinding dusty?

Grinding makes fine concrete dust, which is why it's done with dust extraction running. We'll let you know what to move out and cover up before we start.

Can you remove old epoxy or paint?

Yes. Taking off old coatings is part of preparation. How much work that takes depends on the coating and how well it's stuck, which we'll look at when we quote.
